On being a responsible adult

Today we had the boys birthday party, which is a subject for another post…instead, I need to tell you about a shocker…

A friend’s child was over and as usual, all the kids wanted to play with iPods, iPads, computers, etc. As usual, we allowed it.

[That’s going to change effective immediately.]

When the iPad was used after everyone had gone home, a search was found containing bad words in an order not this but, I’m sure you’ll get the idea: boys, sex, naked, having, with.

The girls using said iPad are 9 & almost 8.

[go ahead, pick your jaw up off the floor, I’ll wait.]

Worse? There was no way we could or would let this go. Mike, being the awesome dad he is, said he would talk to the parents. (Luckily, he knows the mom pretty well and for a long time). When he got home from shocking both sets of parents, we were still reeling from the surprise and shock. (in fact, hours later, I’m still disturbed).

I immediately grabbed electronic devices and set up google safe search, turned off YouTube access, and made parental controls active that hadn’t been before. My boys have never expressed any interest or knowledge or questions or comments even about such adult things. I’d like to keep it that way as long as possible. I’d like the opportunity to talk to them without having a friend or neighbor break the news to me. I’ll be damned if I’m going to let some girl show my boys pictures on the Internet of things that most adults would be ashamed of seeing.

I guess in this day and age, I don’t get to fully decide where or when my kids learn things, but I sure as hell have more choice than at the damn family birthday party!

Sometimes, this parenting gig isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

OK, PLEASE LORD keep my boys in the dark about sex as long as possible, and I hope I have haunted them enough with my naked body to have no interest in ogling naked pictures online anytime soon.
