through my boy’s eyes

In a random “there’s nothing on for 10 minutes” television show choice, Mike choose Apollo 13 tonight.  We have, of course, seen it a hundred times and it was already in the middle – where they’re already in space and all ‘Houston, we have a problem’.

Matt had never seen it before (or had never been interested before, since I have a hard time believing it’s never been on with him around) and to say he was interested would be an understatement.  He was locked on.  He was watching, eyes wide, asking a question here and there (educational movies, FTW! “what’s an amp?”).  When they talked about making a splash in the ocean, he wondered how big it would be and if they would make it.  I giggled a little, seeing the worry in his eyes, wondering if I should ease his mind that they did, in fact, make it back to earth. Then I decided that since he was handling it so well, I would let it go.

I looked over at him while the families watched on tv, and again when they were waiting for  Odyssey to respond to Houston on the way back in. His eyes were wide as he snuggled under a pillow, waiting. Watching him watching made it feel like I was seeing it for the first time.  When they landed and the family cheered, he was happy. And when they splashed into the water, I could see his little body relax.  By the end, his eyes were a little wetter than usual. My sensitive little man.

It was pretty cool watching him experience a good movie; it reminded me that I probably take for granted so many things because *I’ve* done or seen them a million times. It’s nice to re-discover things through his eyes.  Not just movies – but the other day, we splashed in puddles in the middle of a downpour, and I encouraged them to ride bikes in the rain – just like I used to do as a kid.

Seeing the world through their eyes – it makes everything just a little brighter and a little more exciting.

Awfully sweet, and a totally valid point beneath it all.
