16 Years

It’s hard to believe that Mike and I have been married for 16 years. In some ways, I still look at us, truly adults, and wonder when we’re going to have to stop playing house. How can we possibly have been together long enough (20 years?!) when we’re just kids?? (yes, we are both closer to 40 than 35, but still, sometimes it feels like we’re still kids!)

Most people we know our age haven’t been married nearly as long, and so many are shocked when we say 16 years. Yeah, that doesn’t really help with the whole ‘we’re too young to be married this long and have these kids and this life!’ thinking that happens sometimes.  My mom said the other day that we looked like babies when we got married. I have to agree!

I wouldn’t change a single thing. Honestly. We’ve been through a lot in our years together – some bad, but a helluva lot more good. Of course, I’d love to not have gone through some of the bad, but I do know that it made us better people and a better couple.

16 years in, we know each other’s stories; we don’t spend enough alone time together. We are an old married couple. Certainly, like all couples, we take each other for granted here and there. But last night? We went out. We had dinner (Zingerman’s Roadhouse….food so damn good you’ll wonder why you don’t eat there every day) and then we went to the opening night of the Ann Arbor Summer Festival. We enjoyed a couple of bands, the ambiance of lots of happy people and lots of very interesting people watching. We stayed out sort of late, we talked and held hands and laughed.

We need to do that more often.

No, I'm not drunk, just a goofy picture!

Happy Anniversary, hon. I love you!

Happy Anniversary, you two! We don’t spend enough alone time together, either. We need to find a babysitter. Glad you got out and had fun last night!
