I am

I am, thankfully, the mom of boys.

Never was this more obvious than when a mother on Toddlers & Tiaras said she loved having a daughter because she was like having a life-size Barbie doll. I think I gagged a little. (also, the little girl has dreams of growing up and dancing in Vegas; she’s 7).  The number of ways that that statement was wrong notwithstanding, I’m pretty sure no mother of boys has ever thought that it was fun getting them dressed because they are like a Ken doll.

That’s not to say I wouldn’t enjoy dressing up a little girl if I had one, but I am a mom of boys. Who are, indeed ALL boy.

Case in point, yesterday they were counting the number of burps they burped, and they get the biggest kick out of farting. And talking about it.

I love my boys.  While I do, occasionally, roll my eyes at them or get tired of the potty humor, they are mostly amazing.

I build Legos, I laugh at fart jokes, I can throw a football, kick a soccer ball, I understand most sports, I love baseball and love teaching them about it.  I play video games, own my own DS, know a lot about cars.  I can accept messy.  I can accept muddy.  I’m more likely to sit in the sand and play than I am to not. I know about airplanes and trains and more boy stuff than I ever thought I would. They are loud; I can be just as loud.  They sing obnoxiously (they may have learned that from me waking them up singing). They don’t see their coats on the floor where they leave them; they have no concept of putting things away. I am forever picking up behind them.  They eat like teenage boys. They think a trip to the comic book store is a huge treat.

Even though they are such “traditional” boys, I am proud that we have raised them to be sensitive and like things that would have once been stereotypically more girly  – they love cooking, cooking shows, HGTV and even pretend cooking and playing restaurant. They love their stuffies (Matt has many more stuffed animals than I ever did as a kid). They’ll play house with the same enthusiasm as they play drums. They love to read and draw and color.  They love their mama and daddy without reservation. They even help clean on occasion!

But I am the mom of boys. I’m probably less girly because of it, but I wouldn’t trade them for anything.

Just a little photographic evidence from yesterday/today. 🙂

*In case you were wondering, no, no reason for this post. Just a brain purge. I know it’s kind of disjointed and pointless!

Oh lord, I hope you don’t think that all moms of little girls are like the ones on Toddlers & Tiaras! Ha!

It’s funny, I have a girl, but she is totally not a girly-girl. She doesn’t like skirts or dresses, she prefers jeans or leggings. She likes princesses ok (she digs the movies anyway), but she doesn’t care much about the merchandise – she’d rather play with animal toys. I am so, so grateful for that. I can’t really take credit for steering her away from gender-biased stuff either, these are just things she’s decided on her own.

Of course, this probably means that this 2nd girl I’m having is going to be a total girly-girl, just to be different from her sister. We’ll see! But I will NEVER be a pageant mom. I just can’t go there. Those women scare the bejeezus out of me.
