In a freak accident a week ago, Preston fell off our (very short) couch and fractured his wrist. The very first thing he yelled when he hit the floor was “I need to go to the hospital!”. Of course, we sat him down, iced him up and dispensed some pain reliever. However, luck was not on our side and about 40 minutes later, he and I were on the road to the Pediatric ER. (Which took about 35 minutes longer than it should have because of a dumb semi driver who missed a very wide curve in broad daylight on the freeway, but P was asleep, so it was ok)
We were taken back fairly quickly to triage and then only waited about 10 minutes to go back to an exam room. We were seen immediately by the doctor on call (who touched once and said it was probably broken), and taken to X-ray right then. Preston was a trooper through the whole x-ray thing and was wheeled back to to the exam room where we watched the Food Network (much to the surprise of the nurse!). After an absurdly long time (an hour and a half), the doctor FINALLY came back in to look at the x-rays. {about 10 minutes after I went out to the nurse and said Is the doctor going to be able to look at his x-ray any time this decade? Yes, I was snotty, but he was sitting there at a computer, likely working on something, but my boy was thirsty and they refused him any water, dammit! Don’t mess with mama bear, yo!).
Finally, we were released with the diagnosis of a buckle fracture and his wrist was put in a splint. We were given instructions to follow up with Orthopedics in 3-5 days. Poor kid. Just had his appendix surgery restrictions lifted and he breaks his wrist!!
Yesterday we went to get his cast. I am not sure what I was thinking was involved with getting a cast, but apparently, I was WAY off. It’s basically a roll of tape type stuff that they dunk in water and it hardens – so very cool! He chose blue (no surprise) and was great with getting it on. And the doctor said he’ll probably have it off in 2 weeks due to the 1 week of time already served!

Poor chicken.
Poor P!! Sound like you actually got really good treatment in the ED. It can take a very long time sometimes and the docs are juggling so many patients they can’t help but make you wait. The no food or drink thing is in case he needed surgery. If they let him have a drink surgery could have to be postponed for hours and hours. No fun!
Great pics dawn. What a cute little trooper! And I love that he’s wearing his soccer outfit on the sidelines. Gooooo P!!!
Poor guy! Looks like he handled things like a trooper!
We have one of those blue casts at our house, too! My youngest’s stretches from his wrist to his armpit, and when they didn’t have a glow-in-the-dark wrap, he went for blue. I was also surprised how they did it. Totally different than I expected. He’s a week into his full cast (after two weeks in a hard splint), and he’ll be in the cast for two more weeks, then down to a half cast. I can only say I’m happy it happened at the end of summer, and on his left arm!
poor guy! but seriously, could he be ANY CUTER??
awwww… brave boy, indeed. Make sure, when they take it off, to make a clean cut so you can save it and “try” it on years from now. Not that I would know (my daughter LOVES trying on her cast from when she was 3).
It’s not an outfit, it’s a UNIFORM!!!!
@phenom, Dude, what are you talking about??
Poor little guy!! He’s a cutie and a trooper!!
