Cupcake Testing

August 24, 2010 · 2 comments

Ok, so I’m about 80% sure I’m not going to really have the time to make cupcakes for the boys’ birthday party, so the boys and I headed out to a semi-local cupcake place to pick up some different flavors.  Now for the testing!!

Creamsicle Cupcake IMG_8352.JPG
Moist orange-infused cake, stuffed and topped with our homemade Buttercream.

My Thoughts:  moist, but very dense. Fabulous buttercream frosting, but not much stuffed inside as it says. Orange color great, but very subtle orange flavor. Personally would have liked a wee more orange flavor.  Not bad. Giving it 3 out of 5 sprinkles. (hehe)

Matt’s Score: 1 / 5  frosting was “icky”

Preston’s Score: 0 Not a fan at all.

Grumpy Cake Cupcake IMG_8360.JPG
Our rich devil’s food cake stuffed with vanilla buttercream then topped with buttercream pillows and dipped in our homemade ganache.

My Thoughts: This was really good, but again, no stuffing!  But the buttercream pillows dipped in ganache? YUM. 4.5/5

Matt’s Score:  Matt would give this 2 million if he could.

Preston’s Score: Preston, when asked, said he’d give it 9/5 🙂

Red Velvet Cheesecake Cupcake IMG_8358.JPG
Our homemade moist red velvet cake with a creamy cheesecake center topped with our own cream cheese frosting.

My Thoughts: Very moist and fluffy cake. Cream cheese frosting was just right – sweet and creamy, but I didn’t have any creamy center in mine!! 3/5

Matt’s Score: Initial feeling frosting was too thick but that it had “a wonderful aftertaste”  5/5

Preston’s Score: 5/5 “wonderful frosting”

Oreo Cookie Cupcake IMG_8353.JPG

Oreo cookie crumb bottom crust below our rich devil’s food cake topped with melted marshmallows, milk and semi sweet chocolate and Oreo cookie crumbles. A chocolate lovers dream.

My Thoughts: I was actually pretty disappointed in this one.  I’m not sure why there were marshmallows instead of cream for an oreo cupcake!! It was ok, but definitely not my idea of a great oreo cookie cupcake.  1/5

Matt’s Score: 5/5

Preston’s Score: 3/5

Chocolate Stuffed Cupcake IMG_8355.JPG
Our rich devil’s food cake is stuffed with our homemade chocolate buttercream and topped with our homemade buttercream and finished with chocolate sprinkles.

My Thoughts: Their devil’s food cake is really good. The chocolate buttercream is good, and there was definitely some in the middle of this one, but it wasn’t to die for or anything! 4/5

Matt’s Score: 3/5 – “too chocolatey”

Preston’s Score: 4/5

S’more Cupcake IMG_8359.JPG

Graham cracker bottom below our moist vanilla chocolate chip cake topped with Hershey milk chocolate, melted marshmallows and a graham cracker crumble.

My Thoughts: The top is very marshmallow-y, which is good all alone, no cupcake bottom needed. Speaking of the cupcake bottom, it may have mixed in the cake mix, because it wasn’t like a bottom crust at all, which is what I was thinking. All in all, it was ok. 2/5

Matt’s Score: 4/5

Preston’s Score: 3/5

Funfetti Cupcake IMG_8354.JPG (not on the website, but funfetti type with buttercream frosting and sprinkles)

My Thoughts:  Yummy, but not really much better than I could make at home, cake-wise.  Buttercream frosting very good.  4/5

Matt’s Score: 5/5

Preston’s Score: 5/5

IMG_8357.JPG Say CUPCAKE!!

Now I’m not so sure about the purchasing, except for the Grumpy (bumpy) cake ones!! UGH. What to do?!

I say make some cupcakes w your cuz’s help. maybe some chocolate and some Funfetti. Leave them naked (the cupcakes that is 🙂 and put out a bunch of different frostings and sprinkles and let the guests decorate them. And maybe buy one of Ps favorites and one of Ms favorites to stick their candle in. Ya? Then next time you wanna cupcake test? Be sure to wait until said cousin arrives in town. Tee hee.
