Movie Scenes via song

March 20, 2010 · 2 comments

I am a huge fan of music and of movies.  I’m especially a huge fan of movie and tv soundtracks. Lately, I have noticed that there are songs out there that very specifically remind me of movie scenes.  I’m not sure, honestly, if the songs are on the soundtracks or not, but I can literally see the different scenes of the movies when I hear these songs.  And to clarify, I mean they actually remind me of a SCENE in a movie, not just the movie. Please, tell me I’m not the only one, and PLEASE add yours in the comments!!

For example….

  • Hypnotize by Notorious B.I.G. is totally the party scene in 10 Things I Hate About You when Kat is dancing on the table.
  • Sugar High by Coyote Shivers is the end scene of Empire Records when they are rocking out damning the man and saving the Empire.
  • Rockafeller Skank by Fatboy Slim is the choreographed Prom dance scene in She’s All That\
  • In Your Eyes by Peter Gabriel (obviously) is Lloyd Dobbler standing outside Diane Court’s house with his boombox in Say Anything
  • America the Beautiful by Ray Charles – totally the fireworks/4th of July scene in The Sandlot
  • Suite for Solo Cello No.1 as performed by Yo Yo Ma – a spectacular episode of The West Wing
  • The entire Grease Soundtrack – I’ve seen the movie Grease so many times, I can watch the movie in my head via music!
  • Reflection-Adagio by Robbie Robertson & A Call to Courage (sc0re) encompass the entire movie of Ladder 49 for me. Those two pieces fill me with the emotions of hope and pain and dispair and love.

UGH.  I know there are a ton more, but I’ve been working on this post in my head for days and I’m stuck.  Maybe you all can help me out!

Random, but “If You Leave Me Now” by Chicago makes me think of the scene in Three Kings where they’re driving into a totally hairy war scene in a stolen car and that’s the CD they’re playing. I guess I think of it because it’s totally incongruous with what’s going on around them.

“Crazy On You” by Heart reminds me of the Virgin Suicides, the part where Kirsten Dunst & Josh Hartnett make out in his car. Oh, and while I’m thinking of Sofia Coppola movies, “Brass in Pocket” by the Pretenders makes me think of Scarlett Johanssen singing it at karaoke (which annoys me, because I loved that song before, and now I can’t disassociate it from that scene).

I’ve just thought of about a dozen more, and that’s not even counting the songs I associate with scenes in TV shows. Weird how our brains make that audio-visual connection.

What an awesome post! I’m so blown away by your examples (especially the WW reference — LOVED that show!) that I can only come up with one for now: Ferris rocking “Twist and Shout” on the parade float 🙂
