Poor baby

A few days ago, Preston started sniffling and sneezing; the coughs went from dry to wet and painful sounding. The wretched winter cold had caught up to him. Admittedly, we’ve been very lucky (knock on wood) thus far.

Today he woke in the wee hours (while Mike was getting ready to go to work) with a temperature of 102. Mike dispensed some medicine and headed to work; I dozed back off until Preston awoke a little while later crying.  He was just miserable so I brought him down to our bed to relax.  He watched tv – I fell asleep. (Although I miss the baby days, I am so very thankful for my boys being independent on mornings like this!) He was doing ok for most of the morning; quiet but relatively happy. I held off on any medicine to give his body a chance to fight it naturally, but as the day went on, he got worse. By late afternoon, he was cuddled on the couch with me, watching tv and looking so sad.  Every once in a while he would just quietly say “mama”.  He didn’t need anything, just to be sure I was there. That one little word has such power, doesn’t it? Just “mama” and I’m a puddle of goo.

He went to bed a few hours ago, miserable and exhausted, but finally fell asleep.  I gave him night time cough and cold in hopes that he would get some good, solid sleep. So far so good, right?

I went up a little while ago to check on him…he was shivering and making these little groaning noises.  I panicked  grabbed the thermometer and got a 103 degree reading on him. At that moment a light bulb lit up and burst into a million pieces over my head – no fever or pain relief in triaminic. Duh.  We’d already had a throwing up incident earlier – he’s got so much drainage that it takes just a coughing fit to turn into…uh, expulsion, of said drainage, so I knew getting him to take more medicine would be difficult at best.

After a quick look at the bottle and a quick jaunt to Dr. Google and my twitter peeps (waaay faster than calling the doctor!), I verified no pain relief in triaminic and that tylenol was a go.

Except not so easy. I tried to gently wake him to get him to take the medicine; tried a little harder. Finally got him to take it; all was well.  He settled back down and then: coughing fit. Which of course equaled puking, again. (Seriously, am I the only one who catches puke in towels? How disgusting!!) Obviously, Medicine = FAIL.  And more laundry and hand scrubbing for me. And my poor baby who still has a fever and started crying that I told him it was night time medicine so he could sleep and there I was waking him up.

Sigh.

My lovely cousin had an experience with the ick and fever today as well. The big difference is that her baby is still an infant, so high fever means trip to ER usually.  She said she could finally relate to hating the feeling of not being able to make them better and the ache of them being in pain (Hi, Nic!). I told her it gets less scary / better as they get older. Kinda.

But it doesn’t really, does it?

I catch puke in whatever is available. If a bowl is around, great. If not, a towel or blanket will have to do. On our last flight, when Catie got air-sick, I tried to do damage control with one of those tiny airplane pillows. (Dear GOD, I feel bad for whoever had to clean that plane after we left. And I hope they threw that pillow away!)

Hope your guy is feeling better soon. Not much worse than sick babies.
