Belting it out

September 30, 2008 · 3 comments

I love to sing in my car, when I’m alone (or sometimes with the kids, but mostly alone).  I swear I sing as well as whoever I am singing along with.  (FYI: the only way I could carry a tune is if it were in a bag and I was holding onto it).

It is, oddly, one of my very favorite things about being by myself – listening to music REALLY loud and singing even louder.  I’ve been known to seriously lose my breath singing so hard and loud. 🙂

So I thought I would make a playlist of songs that I HAVE to sing when they come on.  You know the ones…the same ones you catch yourself singing when you hear them in stores; the ones that you just have to belt out…

Here’s my list…. PLEASE feel free to tell me what you think and PLEASE add some of your favorites!!

In absolutely no order except the one in which they came to mind…

  • Picture – Sheryl Crow + Kid Rock
  • American Pie – Don Mclean
  • Brown Eyed Girl – Van Morrison
  • My Heart Will Go On – Celine Dion
  • Unwritten – Natasha Bedingfield
  • Sweet Caroline – Neil Diamond
  • Independence Day – Martina McBride
  • Friends In Low Places – Garth Brooks
  • New York, New York – Sinatra
  • Never Ever – All Saints
  • You Give Love A Bad Name – Bon Jovi
  • Livin on a Prayer – Bon Jovi
  • Boogie Shoes – KC & The Sunshine Band
  • Sweet Home Alabama – Lynyrd Skynyrd
  • Tainted Love / Where Did Our Love Go
  • Mickey – Toni Basil
  • Breathe (2 am) Anna Nalick
  • Pretty much any song from Grease
  • Piano Man – Billy Joel
  • Norah Jones (in the right mood, I *AM* Norah Jones)

Ok, that’s a very odd list of songs, but sort of indicative of my 2,000+ songs on iTunes.  Slight trend to older songs – the old “don’t make em like they used to” theory, I guess.

Your turn!!

Okay, I’m supposed to be working. (As usual.) But I love this topic.

I share your need to belt out “Tainted Love” and “American Pie.” I should come up with my own list, but for now I’ll add Blondie’s “The Tide is High” and the Violent Femmes’ “Blister in the Sun.” (What can I say. I’m a child of the 80s.)

Have you ever seen the movie “Little Voice,” by the way? It’s got a lot about singing along with old records. Jane Horrocks actually does sing as well as whoeveer she’s singing along with…
