Soc(cer) it to me, baby!

Matt had his first soccer game today.  A gorgeous day, partly cloudy, a lovely 75ish degrees and a nice breeze.  Perfect day for soccer.  Damn near perfect day for anything except sledding, I’d suppose!

As with most 4-6 year olds attempting to play a team sport, there was a lot of kicking dirt, staring at things other than the ball, and general yelling of “No! Kick it that way!”.  The crowd was good – none of that overzealous parent-coaching going on; rather, a lot of giggling and snickering at our children.

It’s a pretty short game – 4 quarters of 8 minutes each with a 10 minute half-time.  The coaches do line changes (a la hockey) to make sure all the kids get fairly equal playing times.  And they take turns putting on the big shirt to play goalie.

Technically, our team won, 2-1, but they don’t really keep score.  It’s not about the winning or losing, but about the fun and learning of the sport (yeah, whatever, our team is better hehe).

Waiting for his chance to play (my boy is #1!)

Goalie time!! (yes, he looks like he is sleeping)

Breakaway!!!! (nope, he didn’t score, but he sure looked like he was going to!!)

Great pics. The Champ plays soccer as well. Wait until the spring when picking the dandelions vie for the kids attention while on the field.
