Movie Mania

We used to watch a LOT of movies.  Go to the movies, not so often, but we used to actually rent and WATCH movies.  We had the whole surround sound, HD thing going on.  But then we had a little boy, and we started watching more of those kid-friendly type movies. Not complaining though, because some of my favorite movies are kid movies, like Cars, Toy Story, Toy Story 2, Finding Nemo, Madagascar, Ice Age…well, the list goes on and on. When the boy(s) were younger and didn’t pay attention, we could and would watch our own movies either while they were playing or after they went to bed.

BUT

Now they never go to bed at a decent hour (where oh where did the 7:00 bedtime go??), and now they hear everything, and are way too loud for us to watch anything that isn’t in cartoon/Pixar form.

BUT

In the past few weeks, we’ve actually GONE TO 2 movies at theaters, and I’ve seen an additional 3…count them…1…2…3!! movies at home.  I feel like I’ve rejoined the world or something.

First, we went to the movies and saw Wanted with Angelina Jolie, James McAvoy and Morgan Freeman. Lots of action and fun narration by the main character.  We really enjoyed the movie and the special effects.  In fact, we came home and I tried to curve water from the hose instead of a bullet (didn’t work, fyi).

Then one morning I watched The Other Boleyn Girl, based on the book by Phillipa Gregory (which I loved, btw).  It didn’t get very good reviews, and a lot of people I talked to didn’t really like it, but I actually did. No, it didn’t fit the book perfectly (they never do!), but I didn’t mind that with this movie.  It stood on its own pretty well.  There were a lot of things that I felt were pretty important in the book that they skipped in the movie, but in order to do it ‘right’ they would have had to make it either a mini series or a 6 hour movie!!

After that I watched Enchanted with Amy Adams and Patrick Dempsey (oh, and the wicked witch played by Susan Sarandon was fabulous!).  It was a very cute movie and I really enjoyed the mixture of live action and animation.  The boys came down and caught the end of it and enjoyed it as well.

Finally, Mike and I went and saw The Dark Knight on IMAX on Monday.  It. was. awesome. I had previously believed that no one could beat Michael Keaton’s Batman, but after seeing The Dark Knight with Christian Bale as Batman? No competition.  Sorry, Mr. Keaton. Yes, I thought Heath Ledger’s performance as The Joker was great; disturbing and surprisingly believable.  I admit that I tried to see the Heath Ledger I’d seen in past performances, but was unable to. There is no doubt he lost himself in his character in this movie; the sign of a great actor, if you ask me.

And then last night, I stayed up way too late and watched Batman Begins and was impressed with Bale all over again. Yes, I am aware that I should have watched that before The Dark Knight, but honestly, both movies stood pretty well on their own and it didn’t make really any difference at all.

Now I can’t imagine another Batman, Lucius Fox or Alfred.  I’m pathetically sad that Heath cannot reprise his role of the Joker if they make another movie (which they totally could and should!). I have to admit that I liked Maggie Gyllenhaal as Rachel better than Katie Holmes – the role just seemd to fit better (and how dumb was Katie to not take the role again??).

So there you have it, my crazy movie life.  What’s next, I dare wonder!

Wow, we lead parallel lives. We NEVER go to the movies and rarely watch rented movies. But, last week I saw 2 movies in the theater (The Dark Knight and Forgetting Sarah Marshall at the cheap theater) and watch 3 rented movies (Enchanted, Domino and Hellboy). How weird is that?

The word on the street is that Phillip Seymour Hoffman might play The Penguin and Johnny Depp will be The Riddler in the next Batman installment.

Newbie visiting from ‘madness’.

Our movie going habit has taken a knock of late. Now I’m much more keen to make the effort again.
Cheers

The only movie I’ve seen recently was Mamma Mia and I wanted to demand my money back…actually i wanted them to compensate me for having sat through it.
