Introducing Daisy!

(Want her full name, per Matt? Daisy Mitzi Black Dog Gentz). She already has nicknames, which I am trying not to use too much so that she learns her (real) name. Also, I’m trying very hard not to call her Maggie, which I’ve slipped on a couple times already. Matt has taken to calling her Pooch, I call her Doodles, Doodlebop, little girl, and Daisy Mae/Daisy Doo. Mike calls her puppers. Preston squeals ‘doggie!’ or ‘puppy!’ with glee.

She, as you can see, is flippin adorable. She was born on April 25th to the nicest, most laid-back mama lab and has a nice pedigree. The breeder was/is very friendly and knows her labs, which is good. Also, the puppies were loved and played with by kids and lived inside the house, so are somewhat used to the sounds of a house with kids.

I picked her up on Saturday morning and we spent the day playing with her (well, when she wasn’t sleeping!). I have big hopes and plans for this puppy. I want her to be like my dorkdog was – laid back, good with the kids, the ultimate family dog. And she will be. She’s being crate trained, but honestly, she’s very good so far and has been in the crate at night and only a couple of times during the day – but we’re only a couple of days in! I want her to have that special place to go, especially while she’s being potty trained, but I also want her around us. Luckily I’m home enough so that shouldn’t be too hard.

It’s been so long since we’ve had a puppy this small, I forgot that they’re worse than newborns at this age! I slept on the couch the first night so she wouldn’t feel so alone in her crate, and last night, since we had no power until the wee hours, I did the same. I probably will tonight, too, but I’m going to space out her outside visits a bit – I realized taking her out of her crate every time she whined in the middle of the night was probably going to make things worse in the long run.

(She kept going into the bushes – it was nice and cool under there)

So, anyway, there’s the newest member of the family. She has a lot of growing to do, and I’m sure it will happen super fast. As for right now, I’m enjoying being able to cuddle her and pick her up to go outside in a hurry. Since this is our first Lab, if you have any words of wisdom about this breed, feel free to comment. We’ve learned the hard way that the breed makes a big difference in who the dog is and are hoping this was the best choice for us!

I’ve had two wonderful labs in my life. You almost can’t raise them wrong, they’re so absolutely wonderful family dogs. Unfortunately we broke with tradition and rescued a lab-mix pup from the pound, only to find the lab almost unrecognizable and the pit bull side dominant. We’re learning to love her anyway, but she IS.NOT.A.Lab.

Enjoy Daisy!

Very cute.

All I know about Labs are that they are usually good around kids.

Good Luck with Daisy.
