Parenting Zen

Ever brilliant and hilarious, OTJ wrote about zen and the art of parenting today. It was a nice reminder and very timely for me.

I had to take the boys to the doctor today – Matt has some horrid rash that kept all of us up all night last night and since nothing we were trying was working, I decided it was time to drop the twenty bucks and get a doctor-educated opinion. We seriously could not get out of the house…a dawdle here, an “I need” this there, a “I want to hold your hand” and I was ready to scream before we even got to the garage!

Parenting Zen would tell me that I need to get them started sooner and then I don’t have to rush them around, screaming like a lunatic that we’re going to be late! [ohm]

His poor little butt and…uh….nearby areas!  He’s so red and scratched up – he can’t stop itching.  So, a prescription, some encouragement not to itch and instructions to check tonight to make sure it’s not pinworm [blech] and we were on our merry way.

And later, when Matt wanted to help clean the kitchen floor and Preston wanted to mop, PZ {parenting zen} would have allowed them to vacuum and mop and use cleaner wipes for as long as they wanted, no matter that only one little area was getting clean, we were running out of mop stuff and they were actually not really helping so much at all.

There are a few things that PZ will never help though, because they are buttons and my boy(s) seems to know exactly how to push them. For instance, the screaming out of “I’m WET!” annoys me to no end. My boys are so well hydrated that they are seemingly constantly peeing.  During the day, with Matt, I don’t care. But Preston? Oh, the diapers! The worst (or worser as Matt keeps insisting) is that same scream at night.  Night means sheets are wet, clothes are wet, laundry is instantly piling up.

A new trick of Matt’s is breathing in my face. I have no clue who taught him “smell my breath” but if I find out, I’m going to have a meal of onions and garlic and have that person smell MY breath!

It’s obvious I have to work on PZ, but I have to say, lately, Mike and I certainly have the horizontal parenting thing going on.  🙂

It must be instinctive, the whole smell my breath thing, because Punkin Pie does it to me all the time- SO RUDE!!! So we\'ve been working on good manners the past few weeks- unfortunately he knows that all I teach him goes out the window when Grandpa and Daddy are around!
