Bare feet and flashlights

August 19, 2007 · 6 comments

Friday night found us outside with the neighbors.  Lawns were mowed, weeds were pulled, sand was played in and the slide and swings were worn out by the time the kids were done with them.  We adults watched the kids play, enjoying some ‘adult juice’ and laughing over our silly kids.  Many things were figured out – you know, world peace preschool schedules, the cure to cancer, baby gifts and when we’re going golfing.  As darkness began to fall, Matt decided he needed a flashlight, so flashlights were dispersed and the four kids ran back and forth across the freshly cut lawn, racing and laughing with reckless abandon.  We watched the lights bounce down the lawn and laughed as they fell and hopped right back up; we giggled as they raced and declared themselves all winners every time.

One of my favorite memories from childhood is running around barefoot and playing with flashlights in the dark.  I am so thrilled that my boys were able to share a memory and create some of their own.  There’s nothing better than a summer night outside.

You are so right about the summer night outside.

I could see this whole scene in my head. And I got a big smile on my face as I read and pictured it 🙂

Best part – the women doing the lawn work while us men drank beer while leaning on a play schoolhouse. SCORE!!

There is something magical about summer nights when the heat finally subsides and fireflies abound.
