there is still good

Tonight I went to the bookstore. I was in dire need of some new reading material for those brief moments between the boys going to bed and me falling asleep.  :)  I wandered into the children’s book area to see if there was anything new for my little men and found two little boys who were excited to see me and immediately grabbed my hand and pulled me to “come see! come see!” I ended up spending about 10 minutes with these little boys. They kept wanting to show me things and read to them.  They were skinny, the way young boys are, and they shared their bruises and band-aid covered knees with me. They asked about my little boys and had a hard time understanding why they were at home and not out with me.  They wondered how I knew who Tico and Benny and Dora’s other friends were.  They wanted to show me everything they recognized and tell me about how one day they will go to school together, on the same bus.

It was strange. And nice. I asked them a few times about who they were there with, very subtly. Finally they pointed out their dad, sitting with another man, studying a laptop and making notes.  He was wearing scrubs, and as soon as he heard his little ones’ voices he turned to make sure they were ok. He was working hard, it seemed, to watch the boys and get his work done.  I don’t know the full details. Maybe mom works nights and dad works days and is a resident or nurse or working to be one or the other. Maybe he and mom aren’t together anymore. It doesn’t really matter.  The boys were typical 5 & 3 year olds, playtime dirty, but otherwise clean; well-behaved and smart. The older boy stuck right with his younger brother.  They were sweet.  As I left, an employee was hanging around the area and paid attention when they pointed out their dad. Their dad threw a quick smile at me as I waved goodbye.

And when I got to the counter, the guy who helped me was friendly. And generous. And actually took the time to chat a little while ringing me up.  Generally I suck at small talk, but for whatever reason, I was in the zone tonight!

Ugh. It’s after midnight, I’d better wrap it up and get to bed.  M has been in bed for a couple of hours now; I just had to watch Grey’s 2 hour episode.  I was not disappointed!!

“Say Sayonara!”

“But I don’t speak Italian!!”

Super bonus points for anyone (besides M) who can name the show that quote is from!!  :D
