in the gloaming
the sun slipped through the trees
raising thin fingers of crimson
in a silent farewell
behind me, the moon began
its subtle glow and the crickets
started their harmonic dance
i paused and took a full deep breath
and spring filled my lungs
the scents of nature coming back to life
after a long and frigid and smothering winter
the air smelled like spring
a soft caress of warmth and hope
and freedom
suddenly, i was able to breathe again
