Running, the holidays and Parkinsons

I went for my first walk/run last night with Maggie. It wasn’t very well planned out (no iPod, no watch), but I gave it a shot. I alternated running and walking for about 35 minutes – it worked out to about 9/10ths of a mile, so not too bad. I figure I’ll have to do the walking / running for awhile before I can truly “go for a run” but that’s ok. I’m in no hurry. I just have this desire to be a runner again. I ran in high school, but only for a little while. There’s something about it that has always stuck with me; the freedom and just the feeling of movement. I wore the wrong shoes though and my feet really hurt, so I’ve got to try another pair. Once I get further into it, I’ll head to a real store and get fit, maybe with one of those Nike+ pairs that I can use my iPod with…

I really wanted to run tonight, but the migraine that has been hanging around all day got the better of me. Tomorrow, I hope.

I am actually looking forward to the holidays a lot this year. We already put some lights and a tree up in the playroom (at Matt’s request), and we got a little tree for his room as well. He even picked out all of the snowflake ornaments, plus a couple of disco ball ornaments! LOL. ๐Ÿ˜€ We have a little tree for Preston’s room, too. He picked out stars for his, so we’ll get that up tomorrow probably. We need to get a new one for the family room, so we’re still searching for that perfect tree. Last year we did real, but it was a huge mess. And with both kids running everywhere and a puppy, the less mess the better! I’ve almost got the boys’ wish lists completed and I’m working on my own. Once that’s done I’ve got to make a list of presents to buy. I love buying presents for people. Giving gifts is by far my favorite part of the holiday season. It’s so fun for me that I often over buy! We’re doing less gifts in the fam this year though – which means gifts for kids more than anything. Funny, but I was a bit disappointed. I’m old enough to understand and accept, but young enough that I still want to open gifts!! ๐Ÿ˜‰

The newest issue of Self magazine has 88 charitable organizations listed in it. That’s pretty cool. Between that list and the Comic Relief for New Orleans, I’m feeling for donating something other than clothes and old toys this year.

I was watching the Anderson Cooper 360 interview show with Michael J. Fox tonight (previously recorded) and I was struck by how horribly sad it is, this disease that takes away the body but leaves the mind perfectly intact. He is such an intelligent person and you can see how he physically struggles to get the words out. I think his political ads were fantastic and I applaud his efforts. To me, stem cell research is astounding and I don’t have any reservations about it. Especially with cells that are being disposed of anyway. I rather something good come from those cells than nothing at all. A lot of people are concerned about cloning; hell, clone away if it helps cure some of the horrible diseases out there. Maybe we’ll see advanced treatments or cures in my lifetime with the help of stem cell research so that maybe my kids and grandkids won’t have to worry…maybe.

I’m beat; time to sleep this migraine off.

hey, good job with the running! Chris has been bitten by the bug and has already signed up for another marathon. I want to be a runner again too – wish you were closer so we could ease our way back in together! I couldn\'t agree more with you about the love for buying gifts but also the disappoint of not exchanging with the fam. I think Chris and I will exchange gifts with each other and that\'s really it! ah, growing up stinks. ๐Ÿ™

Good for your getting into running again!! Be sure you ease your way into it- it would suck to get injured and have to sit it out for a while as you healed. So be careful- and stretch!! I may be joining Lifetime too soon, if I do, we\'ll have to hook up and work out!
